During busy seasons, we need at least 2 weeks notice to schedule a guided tour. |
· Scavenger hunt sheets can be made available for use during self-guided tours. There are four different levels of scavenger hunt sheets (Kindergarten, 1st-2nd grades, 3rd-5th grades, and middle school). These sheets help your students focus on some of the plant highlights in the Dome.
· K-6th grade teachers may also choose to have a slide show before their scheduled tour. Slide show tours book very quickly in the spring months and are subject to availability of classrooms. Slide shows are approximately 15 minutes and are shown prior to the dome tour. The available slide shows are:
(1) “Observing Plants”– kindergarten – plant colors, smells, sizes, shapes, textures, and distinct characteristics of certain plants in dome.
(2) “Plant Growth and Care”– 1st-2nd grades – looks at different kinds of seeds, what’s inside seeds, how to plant a seed, and what seeds need to grow into a healthy plant.
(3) “Seeds to Plants: Life Cycles with Oscar Orange”– 1st-3rd grades – follow Oscar Orange from seed to fruit to store and purchase; also includes parts of seeds and plants, types of roots, and some common plant uses.
(4) “Leaves”– 3rd-5th grades – leaf sizes, shapes, symmetry, types of leaf margins (e.g. lobed, smooth, ribbed, etc.), types of vein patterns (e.g. pinnate, palmate, parallel), photosynthesis carried out by leaves.
(5) “Habitats in the Dome”– 3rd-6th grades - discusses characteristics, adaptations, and examples of plants that live in desert and tropical rainforest habitats
(6) “Plant Reproduction”– 4th-7th grades – show examples of reproduction from seeds, as wells as vegetative reproduction from roots, stems, shoots, cacti pads, offsets, buds, leaves, and plantlets.
